The Saugus High School Peace Garden

Tragedy can bring people together…

Rotary is here for our community during crisis.

Here’s What Your Donation will go toward…

HISTORY:  The Peace Garden, located on the campus of Saugus High School, was dedicated in 2016 after two years of study and work by the SCV Sunrise Rotary and the Rotary Interact Club, sponsored by the SCV Rotary Club. The purpose of the garden is to serve as an area of meditation, discussion, and education in implementing peaceful conflict resolution.  In 2016 a grant from Rotary District 5280 provided the impetus to purchase the garden’s centerpiece, a gigantic boulder inscribed with the guidelines for Peace Garden discussions: the Rotary Four-Way Test. The test, adopted by Rotary International in 1942, is an ethical behavior model for all Rotarians, and by association for the Rotary Interact members as well. It reads: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

PROJECT:  After the tragic Saugus shooting took place in November, 2019, the SCV Rotary Club and the Saugus High School Interact Students (Rotarians in High School) came together in 2020 to plan a tribute to the two students who lost their lives during this horrible event, Gracie Anne Muehlberger and Dominic Blackwell.  The tribute will include the purchase and installation of several buddy benches and the development of a colorful and peaceful garden.  We are purchasing two plaques, one in memory of Gracie and Dominic, and the other to replace the broken “4 Way Test” plaque, which has gone missing.  Total cost to beautify, add new benches, add new plaques and repair The Peace Garden bolder is $6,000.
